To drive, we’d need to steal a car. To steal a car, Wilder would have to go out on his own again. But to drive, we’d need about ten hours to get to Indianapolis.

Then Lynn suggested we steal a plane instead. Everybody was on board even, until we realized none of us knew how to pilot a plane. Jeanne suggested we purchase tickets and go to the airport. After all, the international airport was just fifteen minutes away. Except we didn’t have any money. And we’d be dead as soon as we stepped into the airport and the cameras caught our faces.

“What about that guy who took you to get Sienna?” Elisa asked me.

The memory tied my tongue for a second. The guy who’d taken Ax, Grover and me to Sienna’s farm—Jushko—had been a drunk and a very bad pilot. Still…

“We’d need a lot of money to hire him, and Ax and Grover knew the guy.” Assuming they could still find him.

Elisa sighed. “Scarlet, it’s time.”

“Time?”

“Time to ask for help,” she clarified.

“We talked about this, Elisa. We’re not going to involve the others in this.”

They already had enough on their plate. I had no idea what Ezra had told Adams about the monastery, but if that asshole wanted to, he could get everybody else in trouble because of it. He could take away the statement he’d given us—which he hadn’t done yet, according to Lynn. Still, there was always a possibility, and I didn’t want them to have to deal with this, too.

“You know, I might be just a kid,” Lynn said, giving Wilder a pointed look, “but even I know that some things just can’t be done alone.”

“We literally have no other way around this,” Elisa said.

“It’s too dangerous,” I said, shaking my head. They couldn’t understand that I was responsible for almost costing them their lives. Arius had almost killed them because of me.

“And going there by ourselves isn’t?” Wilder asked.

“A call to Jimmy—that’s all. We don’t even have Adams’s number, Scar. I’ll speak to Ax or Grover myself,” Elisa said.

Tears fought to come out, but I bit my tongue and held them back. “If they catch us, they’re going to attack them.”

“No, they won’t,” Wilder said in a heartbeat. “They’re after us, not them. The other Storms don’t pose much of a threat to Adams right now. They don’t know his secrets.”

“And the phone Jimmy gave me is secure. You know how he is,” Elisa said. Her phone was off, too. It had been since the last time she spoke to Jimmy after leaving Bloomsburg. We’d felt safer that way.

“We can ask them for help, or we can stay here with Jeanne until somebody finds us, or the world goes to shit,” Wilder said, holding me prisoner with his potent gaze. “Either way, they’re your people, so it’s your decision to make.”

All their eyes on me made me feel really small, like my body had suddenly lost substance. They were right. We had no other way to get to Adams’s family without help.
